Mark Dance opens the HPBC Fall 2026 Pastors Forum series, Hard Work and Good Rest, with a straightforward challenge: Baptists are an all-in “go” culture — and go is a strong biblical word. But so is stop.

 

Drawing from his newly released book, Rest Well, Lead Well: Why Sabbath Matters to Your Ministry, Mark gives four reasons pastors should take Sabbath seriously.

 

First, Sabbath is a command to obey. It’s number four on the Ten Commandments, and the commandments aren’t up for prayer, discussion, or a vote. As Mark puts it, we tend to be conservative about what we believe but liberal about how we apply it — quietly assuming that ministry grants us an exemption. Second, Sabbath is a gift to enjoy. Isaiah 58 calls it a delight, not a punishment or a spiritual timeout. Here Mark draws a crucial line between self-denial, which Scripture commands, and self-neglect, which it never does. Third, Sabbath is a plan God himself modeled in Genesis 2 — and pastors can’t blame church members for time we have mismanaged ourselves. Fourth, and most importantly, Sabbath is a person. Colossians 2 calls the Sabbath a shadow whose substance is Christ.

 

Mark speaks candidly about his own burnout fifteen years ago, when he was working seven days a week through a church relocation project and it took a doctor, not a preacher, to tell him his pace was unsustainable. “The church was growing and I wasn’t,” he says, “and then eventually the church stopped growing too.”
