Dr. Sung Ho “Steven” Kang was born in Daejun and grew up in Seoul, South Korea. His family immigrated to Honolulu, Hawaii in October 1985. Steven served the church as an assistant pastor (1983-1994) and as a senior pastor (1994-2000). He has served as a United States Army Reserve (USAR) Chaplain since 2000. Steven is a US combat veteran, deployed to Iraq from 2003-2004.
Steven graduated from Korea Baptist Theological University in 1985 (Bachelor of Theology). He also earned three degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MDiv 1994; Th.M. 1998; Ph.D. 2004). His Ph.D. dissertation was on Evangelistic Preaching. Steven taught Missiology and Evangelism as an Adjunct Teacher at Southwestern Seminary then as a full-time faculty member at The Houston Graduate School of Theology (Assistant Professor) from 2004 to 2007. He planted Euless Korean Baptist Church, Euless, Texas and served as Senior Pastor from 1994 through 2000.
Steven joined the Hawaii Baptist Convention Staff team in 2007. He has served as an interim pastor at four church churches in Hawaii and been on mission trips to Guatemala, The Philippines, Uzbekistan, China, and Samoa. He is currently teaching Contextualized Leadership Development for Gateway Seminary.
Steven has been married to Monica since 1989. They have one son, Daniel and a daughter, Sharon.
