50 Years of Progress 1943-1993
1926 Charles J. McDonald, a Baptist business man who moved from Vancouver, Canada, to Honolulu, conducted the first service in Wahiawa in January.
1928 On Easter Sunday, April 16, McDonald baptized ten girls and one adult in a stream in a wooded area near Wahiawa.
1934 The Wayside Baptist Chapel was constituted under McDonald's leadership. This church was to become the first Southern Baptist Church in Hawaii.
McDonald wrote and later visited the Home Mission Board, the Sunday School Board, and the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention asking for missionary assistance.
1937 In October, the Foreign Mission Board sent missionary Park H. Anderson to make a religious survey of Hawaii. The Foreign Mission Board voted in December to Alend@ missionaries to Hawaii
1938 On October 21, Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Blackman, China missionaries, arrived to serve in Hawaii.
1940 Mr. And Mrs. James Belote and Hannah Plowden arrived in October. In November, Dr. And Mrs. H.B. Ramsour arrived from Japan; and in December, Dr. And Mrs. Victor Koon arrived from Manchuria. On instruction from the Foreign mission Board, these eleven missionaries formally organized the Hawaiian Mission of the Southern Baptist Convention on December 12th.
1941 The Mission Church, founded by a Baptist lay preacher, Joseph Tyssowski, voted to become Baptist and called Victor Koon as pastor in February. At that time the church name was changed to Olivet Baptist Church, the first Southern Baptist Church in Honolulu. The church had begin in 1926 on Young St.
Charles McDonald was influential in helping the Hawaiian Mission to obtain property on the corner of University and Kaala Avenues for Mission Headquarter and Baptist Bible School. The school was established at 2323 University Avenue on October 1 with Hannah Plowden as principal.
Before December 7, Mr. And Mrs. E.B. Dozier, Mr. And Mrs. Malcolm Stuart, Clarabel Isdell, and Helen McCullough arrived.
An independent Japanese-speaker group, pastored by Rev. Toshio Hirano, decided to affiliate with Southern Baptists, choosing the name Grace Baptist Church.
